Addition By Subtraction

I think the vast majority of Christians believe that we can just add Jesus on top of all the other things we have going on in our lives and we’ll experience the life he offers.

Most of us long for a life of love, joy, peace, contentment, and overall health in our lives. But, we forget that experiencing this only happens through a close relationship with Jesus.

And, that takes intentionality and time.

We can’t just “add Jesus” into our already busy lives and expect to let him satisfy the deepest longings of our heart.

The only want to let him transform us is to intentionally create space for him.

This means becoming less busy.

To do this, we must subtract things from our lives before we add new things.

I call this addition by subtraction.

Truthfully, we all waste time on things that don’t bring us closer to God.

Netflix, Facebook, obsessive hobbies, and destructive habits crowd our schedules.

But, what would happen if we took an honest look at our lives and removed just one thing to make space for God?

I believe you would start to see real spiritual growth.

So, that’s my challenge for you as we wrap up summer. Take few minutes right now and ask God to honestly evaluate where you are wasting time. As the spirit leads you, remove it from your life as an act of obedience. Then, after you have subtracted it, intentionally add back the space in your life to grow your relationship with God.

If you do, I’m confident you will begin to hear his voice a little more clearly and take a step towards the life that Jesus offers.

Seek well,

Tim
